Spanish River 2026

The Spanish River has a rich natural and cultural history and is protected as a Provincial Park, today it is mostly used by recreational paddlers. Your trip begins with a train ride into Spanish River Provincial Park. You will disembark the train at the “Forks” stop and begin our journey down river. Your guides will spend time on whitewater instruction to prepare everyone for the upcoming 6 days of fun whitewater

paddling covering over 103km.

This trip is perfect for those looking to challenge themselves with whitewater paddling, and get away from their busy everyday lives to experience nature. Enjoy paddling and swimming in dark blue waters, fishing, classic Canadian Shield wilderness, and even try to spot a moose as you paddle down the beautiful Spanish River.

This trip is classed as ‘Moderate’: If you are new to whitewater this is a great place to start.  MHO Adventures guides take the time to teach paddling strokes and skills that will allow you to maneuver

safely down the class 1-2 rapids you will encounter. You can expect a certain amount of physical exertion, with 4-6 hour days on the river and portaging.

What paddling skill level is required?

Do I need backcountry camping experience?

We do recommend having at least one backcountry trip under your belt so you know what to expect. It’s important to be aware that this is a wilderness setting, which means using outdoor washroom facilities (ie. a hole), sleeping in tents, and embracing a more rustic lifestyle. We’ll go over all of this in our pre-trip meeting so you’ll have a better idea of what to expect. Being comfortable with these aspects is essential to fully enjoy the adventure.

Can I bring my own camping gear?

MHO Adventures are supplying you with most of the gear, and we want to utilize and allow the guides to easily prepare. We recommend using everything that is included but if there is a piece of gear that you are very particular about, you may bring your own (ie. life jacket or paddle). Please review the list of what is Not Included. A more detailed pack list will be provided closer to the trip date.

What will a typical day be like?

You can expect a certain amount of physical exertion, with 4-6 hour days on the river and portaging. The route will cover a total of approximately 103km over the course of 6 days.

Can I film/take pictures?

We totally support you documenting your trip to look back on later.  However please be mindful to not capture others in photos or videos that would prefer not to be photographed. Also, take as many photos and videos as you want as long as it is not interefering with the pace of the trip.

Will there be coffee?

Yes, you will be caffeinated! We can't guarantee that it will be the exact brand and brewing style that you prefer but these are the joys of backcountry camping!

I'm Canadian, do I need travel insurance?

If you are travelling from outside of the Ontario then it is recommended you purchase additional health insurance specifically for extraction from the backcountry.  Ambulance bills and prescriptions will not be reimbursed by your home province.  (Speaking from experience)

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

MHO Adventures is dedicated to offering a healthy, hearty, and delicious menu. Their menu planning is done with great care to ensure proper nutrition every day of the trip. They work closely with our clients to accommodate most dietary needs, address concerns, and avoid allergens.

Quality food plays a vital role in health, safety, and overall enjoyment during wilderness expeditions. Nutritious, flavourful meals provide the energy and focus needed to meet the physical and mental demands of exploring the great outdoors.

Will they provide camp chairs?

Yes, MHO Adventures can provide Helinox Chair 1 camp chairs for those that would like one. You can also bring your own if you prefer.

Do I have to share a tent?

Sharing is not mandatory but if you are coming with a friend MHO can provide you with an appropriate tent to share.

How will water be treated?

Water will be treated via gravity filters or boiling water.  On occasion tablets are used.  You can bring your own personal filtration system or tablets.

Will they supply us with a dry bag for our gear?

Yes, MHO Adventures will provide each person with their own 60L Bear barrel to store their gear throughout the trip. It is recommended to bring a small dry bag as your day bag.

Will there be bugs?

Yes, be prepared for bugs - although they shouldn't be horrible at this time of year.  A bug shirt or at least a bug net for you face is recommended along with long sleeves and long pants.

What type of PFD's will they provide?

MHO Adventures will provide paddling style PFDs.

What kind of food can we expect?

Dining in the wilderness should never mean sacrificing flavour or nutrition. Our carefully crafted gourmet meals are designed to be portable, delicious, and nourishing, elevating your outdoor experience. Each meal is thoughtfully prepared to fuel your adventure while allowing you to savour the natural beauty around you.

What shoes should I bring?

It is recommended to have water shoes with a good sole paired with neoprene socks (ex. Keens or Merrells etc.) for getting in and out of the canoe.

What type of paddles will they provide?

MHO will supply paddles that are sufficient for whitewater paddling.  If you have your own paddle that you would like to use, feel free to bring it however I suggest using the provided paddles for the whitewater sections.

Will Tori Baird be on the trip?

No, Tori will not be on the trip but she will be there to support you leading up to the trip and answer any questions or ease any hesitations you may have.

Can I bring alcohol?

Yes, we welcome folks to bring their own alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. No glass containers.

What is the bathroom situation?

On the Spanish River, every campsite has a thunderbox.

Are there any portages?

Depending on group skill and water level there can be zero portages, but if the water level happens to be low at the time there may be 1 or 2 short portages on clear trails.

What if I have no whitewater experience?

We run all our trips in a clinical style, which means that our guides will teach participants how to read the water and all the strokes and maneuvers needed to navigate the rapids safely.

Do they provide a camp pillow?

No, but we recommend that you bring one if that will help you feel more comfortable at night. (The 60L barrels have plenty of space!)
