Episode Recap: Finding Confidence & Community in the Outdoors with Ann-Marie

Updated: Mar 26

I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Ann-Marie, an outdoor enthusiast, photographer, teacher, and content creator. We talked about her journey from powerlifting to hiking, camping, and fishing, her love for ice fishing, and how she found her place in the outdoor space despite not growing up in it. We also dove into content creation, imposter syndrome, and the importance of building an authentic community online. If you’ve ever felt like an outsider in the outdoors, Ann-Marie’s story will remind you that there’s no right way to enjoy nature—just your way.

Meet Ann-Marie

Ann-Marie’s journey into the outdoors started as a recovery activity from powerlifting, which led her to hiking, then mountain biking, and eventually, camping and fishing. With the encouragement of her husband, she transitioned from day hikes to multi-day trips, and despite a terrible first camping experience, she kept going back. Now, she’s fully immersed in canoe camping, ice fishing, and fly fishing, proving that you don’t have to grow up in the outdoors to find confidence and belonging in it.

Key Takeaways from This Episode

  • The outdoors is for everyone, and your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

  • You don’t have to love camping at first—it took Ann-Marie a few tries before she truly enjoyed it.

  • Ice fishing isn’t just about catching fish—it’s about being outside, slowing down, and enjoying the process.

  • Authenticity in content creation makes a bigger impact than chasing trends.

  • Community is everything, and social media can be a powerful tool for connection.

  • Imposter syndrome is real, but confidence comes from doing what you love, regardless of expertise.

  • Fishing teaches patience, awareness, and appreciation for the natural world.

  • You don’t need expensive gear to start enjoying the outdoors.

  • Being yourself online attracts the right audience, even if they don’t always comment or engage right away.

  • Sharing the imperfect moments makes outdoor adventures feel more accessible to others.

Q&A Highlights

Q: What inspired you to start sharing your outdoor experiences?

Ann: I wanted to show that the outdoors is for everyone, no matter where you’re starting from. I didn’t grow up doing this, and I think it’s important to share both the struggles and the joys so others feel encouraged to try.

Q: What’s the appeal of ice fishing for you?

Ann: It gives me a full day outside, from early morning prep to watching the sunrise over the ice. It’s a mix of adventure, patience, and strategy—and a great way to enjoy winter.

Q: What advice do you have for beginner content creators?

Ann: Do it for you. Share what you love, focus on having fun, and don’t worry about numbers. Your content will connect with the right people when it’s authentic.

Q: What’s a piece of gear you always bring on trips?

Ann: My Lugalu portable toilet—a luxury item, but totally worth it!

Q: Canoeing or hiking when it comes to camping?

Ann: Canoeing! I’ve been converted. 😂
