FAQs
A minimum deposit of $999 plus GST is required to reserve your spot, and all payments are non-refundable. The remaining balance is due 60 days prior to departure. Payment plans can be arranged. Because of the nature of the trip and the preparation involved, all payments are final and non-refundable.
The Teslin River is scenic and relatively calm, making it a great choice for those looking to get introduced to paddling or build confidence on the water. Up North's experienced guides will be there to support you every step of the way, and you’ll receive plenty of guidance on paddling and camping skills throughout the journey. Although you don't need to have prior paddling experience, you should be physically fit enough to handle long days of paddling (up to 8 hours).
We do recommend having at least one backcountry trip under your belt so you know what to expect. It’s important to be aware that this is a wilderness setting, which means using outdoor washroom facilities (ie. a hole), sleeping in tents, and embracing a more rustic lifestyle. We’ll go over all of this in our pre-trip meeting so you’ll have a better idea of what to expect. Being comfortable with these aspects is essential to fully enjoy the adventure.
Up North Adventures are supplying us with most of the gear, and we want to utilize and allow the guides to easily prepare. We recommend using everything that is included but if there is a piece of gear that you are very particular about, you may bring your own (ie. life jacket or paddle). Please review the list of what is Not Included. A more detailed pack list will be provided closer to the trip date.
A total canoe trip is 350km over 9 days, making it approx. 50+km per day of paddling. A typical start of the day would be to get on the water around 9am and paddle for 6-8 hours with breaks and lunch in between before setting up camp in the late afternoon/evening.
Can I film/take pictures?
We totally support you documenting your trip to look back on later. However please be mindful to not capture others in photos or videos that would prefer not to be photographed. Also, take as many photos and videos as you want as long as it is not interefering with the pace of the trip.
Will there be coffee?
Yes, you will be caffeinated! We can't guarantee that it will be the exact brand and brewing style that you prefer but these are the joys of backcountry camping!
Where can I store my luggage?
If you have luggage or gear that you want to have in Whitehorse with you but don't plan on bringing it on the canoe trip you can leave it in the locked storage at the hotel you'll be staying at before and after the canoe trip (Sternwheeler or similar). Please be mindful of space restrictions and only leave a bag or two.
I'm Canadian, do I need travel insurance?
If you are travelling from outside of the Yukon Territory then it is recommended you purchase additional health insurance specifically for extraction from the backcountry. Ambulance bills and prescriptions will not be reimbursed by your home province. (Speaking from experience)
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes, Up North Adventures will do their best to accommodate all dietary restrictions. If you have specific dietary needs or allergies, please be sure to communicate them clearly and specifically on the forms provided so we can ensure an enjoyable experience for all! If you have many restrictions and allergies and would feel more comfortable bringing your own meals, please let us know and we can discuss deducting food costs from your price. (Please note this will only be in very rare and specific circumstances)
Will they provide camp chairs?
Will they provide back rests in the canoes?
Yes, Up North Adventures can provide the typical folding camp chair for those that would like one. You can also bring your own if you prefer.
No but you can find the folding back rests at Canadian Tire and similar outdoor gear stores. They slide nicely down the side of the bag for easy transport.
Do I have to share a tent?
How will water be treated?
Yes, Up North Adventures will be providing 3-person tents for 2 people to share.
Water will be treated via gravity filters or boiling water. On occasion tablets are used. You can bring your own personal filtration system or tablets.
What rating should my sleeping bag be?
Will they supply us with a dry bag for our gear?
Will there be bugs?
It is recommended to bring a bag with a rating down to -5ºC. This time of year can bring temperatures anywhere from 5ºC to 30ºC.
Yes, Up North Adventures will supply each person with their own 115L dry bag for your personal gear.
Yes, be prepared for bugs - although they shouldn't be horrible at this time of year. A bug shirt or at least a bug net for you face is recommended along with long sleeves and long pants.
What type of PFD's will they provide?
Up North Adventures uses Stohlquist PFDs.
Do I have to share a hotel room?
Can I get a preview of the menu?
Yes, the rates are based on double occupancy.
Up North Adventures runs quite a few trips throughout the year and their guides are responsible for organizing the menus. Menu's will be chosen based on dietary restrictions and allergies which will be sorted in the days leading up to the trip so it is difficult to provide a menu in advance.
What shoes should I bring?
It is recommended to have water shoes with a good sole paired with neoprene socks (ex. Keens or Merrells etc.) for getting in and out of the canoe. Some folks recommend using rubber boots as the water can be quite cold. It is also a good idea to bring a second pair of shoes that will stay dry to wear around camp and/or for hiking.
What type of paddles will they provide?
Up North Adventures uses Carlisle paddles. Again, if you would prefer to use your own, you are welcome to bring it! Depending on your Airline it may have to be checked in as oversized luggage.
Will Tori Baird be on the trip?
No, Tori will not be on the trip but she will be there to support you leading up to the trip and answer any questions or ease any hesitations you may have.
